The title of this blog is (hopefully obviously) a play on words. It reflects my belief that ethics awareness is a necessary condition for the Good Life. Not in some elitist sense — of course I do not think that people who do not take college courses in philosophy and ethics are thereby rendered incapable of leading good lives. On the contrary, it seems to me that either explicitly or implicitly working through ethical issues - what is valuable, what you should do, how you should live — is a spontaneous and wonderful feature of nearly all humans’ day to day thoughts and personal narratives. But, these are Big Questions, and they are tough ones. Paradoxically, giving serious consideration to ethical issues often seems to diminish one’s confidence in the answers, rather than increasing it. With this in mind, I hope to shed some light on a little corner of the field for my own benefit, and maybe for yours, too.
I anticipate that this blog will eventually cover at least the following topics: ethics in many forms, including but not limited to virtue ethics, education and school reform, politics lite, and food issues (vegetarianism, nutrition, slow food, etc).
I have tried blogging before, and failed miserably. I remain attracted to the idea of doing it, but have historically lacked the time, motivation, interest and other necessary and/or sufficient qualities to blog successfully.
So, here I am, giving it another shot. In order to reduce my chances of failing again, I am writing the first post…
I hope that focusing on this topic will clarify why on earth I am trying blogging again.
If I do manage to keep up with this thing, I hope to revisit the topic of the value of blogging in the future, and I will link the posts here.
Thanks for reading. I welcome your feedback.
